Biden dropped out of the race. Kamala Harris raised $50M in a single day after his endorsement for President.
We have but one job ahead of us for the next 105 days. It won't be enough to donate to Kamala or any other candidate if we don't get people to the polls. Reach beyond your political echo chamber and talk to people who don't vote. Tell everyone you know that this election is truly the most critical election of our lives. We must defeat Trump and anyone who follows him. The only way to do this is to vote.
All the people you know who tell you that voting won't change anything, remind them that their voice will never be heard if they stay silent. That silence is complicity. Staying out of politics at this point is like ignoring the fire alarm because you can't smell any smoke.
While you're at it, remind them that more people are running for office than Kamala Harris. We can kick out Ted Cruz by voting for Colin Allred. We can get Caroline Harris out by voting for Jennie Birkholz. We can change the makeup of our county by voting for Democratic candidates for County Attorney and Constable. We can support our current Democrat electeds by ensuring they remain in office.
I'm not one to endorse voting straight ticket, generally, but the current state of the Republican party in Texas and the US changes things. If we can defeat Republicans in enough races, we stand a chance at killing the sickness that's taken over.
As important as stopping Trump from becoming President, we need to remember how the Republican party has affected Texas. Two weeks after Hurricane Beryl hit Texas, 500 homes are still without power. Half of the 23 deaths in the Houston area are heat-related. Heat-related illnesses and deaths spiked with no AC and temperatures in the triple digits. While CenterPoint Energy is rightly under fire, we can't forget that Republicans run the Railroad Commission and appoint the Public Utility Commission. As long as those agencies in charge of regulating oil and gas and utilities are beholden to Republican interests, not much is going to change. Voting Democrat for every open state office is one way to affect change. Think of all the money that Abbot has spent on "border control" and how much that could have helped harden and improve our utility infrastructure.
Our job for the next 105 days is to motivate people to vote. Williamson County has a high registration rate, over 90%. Yet, we're lucky if we can get a 40% turnout. We must get that leftover 50% to the polls. Give people the early voting dates. Talk to them about how important it is to vote in this election from the top of the ticket to the bottom. Change will only happen if we all participate.
